Not too long ago, it was hard to ignore the buzz online about Twitter marketing tools. It was thought that Twitter was one of the most effective ways to build a list and to get folks to buy the products you are promoting. However, how much of a bang for your buck do you get from any of these tools that were pushed at us to improve our gross revenues? We are going to discuss Twitter marketing and whether or not it is worth your time and expense as part of your internet marketing campaign.

Like many of you, when all the tools came out to help people build a large Twitter following that you could promote to, I decided to check out. Not only did I put out money to join programs that would get me followers but I invested in several softwares to help promote the products I was selling. In all, I ended up paying for about eight different programs that would assist me with all of this.

One of these programs was an automatic ‘people follower’ on Twitter with the intention that some of those people would follow me also. If someone was not following me, I had another tool that would automatically take them off my to-follow list. This would allow me to follow different Twitter users again to get them to follow me. On top of some other tools that are not actually worth noting, I purchased a program that would automatically take my blog posts and automatically Tweet them as soon as they were published on my blog. In the beginning, I was genuinely delighted with the end results after using the programs in combination as they actually delivered on what they promised. Nevertheless, my exhilaration was quickly crushed when I realized that I wasn’t generating any money. I would post to my blog 10 times each day and those blog posts would be displayed directly on Twitter just like they ought to. Hoping to increase the number of daily posts, I discovered a way to automatically post any number of entries to my blog and hopefully get more followers.

The results of my efforts are: In three years, I was able to build a Twitter following of approximately 10,000 individuals. You may be very pleased to achieve that number of followers, but there’s more to come. Also in the past three years I have had over 15,000 of my blog posts that were promoting affiliate products added to my Twitter account. My blog posts displaying on Twitter was the only type of advertising for that blog I did and to find out the effectiveness of Twitter I did not even ping new posts as they were published. Exactly how ‘good’ it was quickly became evident: after 3 years only two affiliate sales generated $46.74 plus a further $9.10 for Adsense. With just 2 – 4 visits per day originating from Twitter, perhaps this is not surprising.

Despite me employing programs to make the job simpler and achieving roughly 10,000 followers on Twitter, I still could not turn a decent profit using Twitter marketing for my blog. At the end of the day I’m now out of cash for the Twitter programs I invested in because my dollar return was so dismal. Finally, I cannot personally recommend using automatic software tools as an effective means of advertising on Twitter.
